Mixed-media Architecture Drawing – Texture/Frottage, Grade: 7-8

Following the Alberta Program of Study this lesson was designed for the students to: acquire a repertoire of approaches to recording visual information, develop the ability to investigate visual relationships in their recorded images and in the environment.

Students were also expected to express technical competencies and individual insights (drawings).

The above prerequisites called for differentiated learning as every student worked on the project at different pace. This was due to various levels of previous experience but also learning modes of the students.

In composition learners were working on developing competence with the components of images:

  • experiment with colour effects on compositions.– experiment with techniques and media within complete compositions of two and three dimensions.

  • explore the transformation of form in composition: progression, alteration, exaggeration.

  • examine and simplify basic shapes and spaces.

  • employ space, proportion and relationships for image making.

Objectives of this lesson – by the end of the lesson students will:

  • Be able to finish the first stage of an architectural drawing of their choice --> reference picture --> exterior or interior architecture

  • Learn how to experiment with line and shapes to create an image (collage, frottage and painting --> to achieve the mix-media technique

  • Know how to describe their own artwork using appropriate vocabulary: composition, space, elements, unity, depiction, texture etc.

  • Realize that by applying different materials to the image they express their own ideas

  • Know that we all perceive objects differently therefore our art is unique (to develop a personal artistic style)

Materials: (size 61 x 45 cm) card stock paper, pencils, graphite stick, eraser, printer, video, paint, brushes, different types of paper, textured materials.

Activities:

  • Intro. Explain a bit more about the technique and that it is all about creativity--> not copying the image ---> video (inspiration). Show various examples of frottage and texturing techniques – books and projected images of different types of mix-media drawings (ongoing) à inspiration, comparison – logical, visual, verbal;

  • Various music played – aural, ongoing

  • Demo of applying different texture, paper, paint etc.

  • Students start building the collage by applying different materials

  • Free time within art related activity for those who are finished earlier

  • We share our experiences; short recap– social, verbal

  • Clean up after every stage
