Blow Paint Faces - Express The Mood!   Grade: 4-5

People’s faces and hair have different shapes. They can also express different moods and feelings.

In this inquiry, mixed-media technique students experimented with paint to create the shapes of the hair (static or dynamic). The watery paint was fun for them to work with as the students tried to control the unpredictable liquid movement to achieve the desired visual effect.

Additionally, learners studied the proportions of human faces and the shadows the light creates around them trying to achieve the 3-dimensional illusion.

Activities:

  • Intro-->Inquiry-->Game: ask few students to step out so we can all analyze their face shapes then show various examples of human faces portrayed in art with the emphasis on hair – books and projected images on the TV screen (ongoing) -->inspiration, comparison – logical, visual, verbal; 1 min.

  • Different kinds of music played in the background – aural, ongoing

  • Demo: Shapes of a face; different views (front, side view) --> hair (static, dynamic); Blow Paint Technique – “how to” – physical, social; 7 min.

  • Exploration --> Students decide on the shape of their faces --> Drawing with markers --> experiment with paint; (creativity, problem solving, fine motor skills); /scaffolding when needed/- solitary, physical; 31 min.

  • Free time within art related activity for those who are finished earlier

  • We share our experiences (can art be therapeutic?) short recap – social, verbal; 5 min.

Clean up; 4 min.

Drip Painting - Action vs. Art!   Group Project; Grade: 10

How does it feel to paint like Jackson Pollock? Do we have to control ourselves and the medium when creating art? Can we just let it go? Take action! Paint and be part of the group! The picture will appear and you will be amazed by its texture and intensity of colour.

Here is a video of our project completed with Studio Art 10 class.
